This essential guide to coming out as a non-believer has been written to make it easier for atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, and non-believers of all ages and backgrounds to be open about their non-religiosity while minimizing the negative interactions in familial, social, and professional circles.

As a survival guide for non-believers who wish to come out, this book provides advice and resources for those interested in publically rejecting religious dogma as well as real stories from non-believers who have experienced coming out to less-than-supportive family or friends.

Whether you're new to disbelief and looking for the cleanest possible break from your former faith or you're a lifelong atheist who wants to establish a sense of community with like-minded people, this guide provides useful resources including

  • Tips for handling potential conflicts with believers
  • The author's answers to some of the most frequently asked questions on behalf of believers
  • Numerous references to support groups, services, and advocacy organizations dedicated to non-theists.

From dealing with grief from a secular perspective to handling potential clashes in religious worldviews between significant others, this book offers multiple perspectives from non-religious individuals who have generously shared their experiences to help those atheists who may find themselves in similar situations.

Mom Dad I'm an Atheist The Guide to Coming Out as a Nonbeliever (Audible Audio Edition) David G McAfee David Smalley LLC Dogma Debate Books

This is an excellent guide to coming out as an atheist! And as far as I can tell it's the only book with that unique but very important goal. Because the purpose is preparation for coming out, McAfee doesn't try to cover everything. That's one thing I really hope for in a book...don't try to be all things to everyone. So there's no big discussions of reason vs. faith, no significant exposé biblical of problems, and no critiques of Christian apologetics. David understands that these all require separate treatments, so he touches on them and recommends a number of websites for further study. Perfect.

McAfee's perspective is also unique in that he's a life-long atheist. He went through many of the same issues that I did as a former Christian, and he elaborates that coming out is a continual process in our American religious culture. So besides this book...from a former Christian's perspective...I'd also recommend Seth Andrew's "Deconverted: A Journey from Religion to Reason".

When I came out almost a year ago, McAfee's book and Andrew's book had just been published; so I didn't even know they were available. And I really wasn't prepared for what was to follow. Like McAfee tells you, coming out is not easy...not if you're a life-long atheist in an atheist family, and certainly not if you're like me...a former Christian still in a Christian family. You really should expect the unexpected. Most believers will probably not take it well that you're not one of them anymore. That was the biggest thing I wasn't prepared for.

So what are the best things you can before coming out?
1. read this book
2. read "Deconverted" if you're a believer
3. prepare yourself to answer questions by reading many of the great freethought works out there (I've recommended some.)
4. if possible try to connect with other atheist
5. prepare yourself to be patient once the word gets out

My biggest goal as an outted atheist is just to help others go through the process a little easier than I did. So I'll be recommending McAfee's book to everyone I come across.

Mom Dad I'm an Atheist The Guide to Coming Out as a Nonbeliever (Audible Audio Edition) David G McAfee David Smalley LLC Dogma Debate Books Reviews

I'm not much of a reader, but this book entices me to read again. Being a closet Atheist, this book helps me to make sense of what Atheism really is, how to explain to other people what it is and how to make valid points when discussing the subject matter. Being that the author himself is an Atheist and have testimonials in the book from other Atheist helps a lot as well. It's been a while since I read it, but gosh darn it I would recommend it to anyone who has a religious family that might throw the hammer down pretty hard on them if they "came out".
I just finished your book, and it is a great book. I kinda skipped around in the book a bit, but with this book, that is fine. I am not a big reader so I was pleasantly surprised to see how short this book was. One or two of the testimonies did really touch me, and I am thankful that you put those stories in there. Overall, its a good book, and a bang for the buck, and I would definitely recommend it to any new secularist, a veteran, or a baby eating, hellbound heathen, and everything in between. When I get the money, I will purchase your book, "Disproving Christianity," and I look forward to reading that. Thanks again David!
~Your fellow hell eating, baby bound heathen, Sean
Growing up as a Jehovah Witness I had a lot of questions about the origins of everything, my mother would tell me my mind was not capable of understanding gods immense power. That only made me question more things around me. Like peoples death and suffering. When I came out to my mother as a nonbeliever I was not prepared for her negative reaction, after reading this book I have a better plan on how to come out to my dad as an Atheist. I recommend this book to anybody that is thinking about coming out to anybody. I only wish I had read it before. It would have saved me a lot of pain.
I wish I would have read this book a year ago when I first experienced my "faith crisis." I handled so many things incorrectly, and it's led to a lot of frustration and heartbreak. I came from a fanatical religion, and handled my recognition of its falsity with equal fanaticism. I will recommend this book to anyone who realizes that the church that they belong to cannot be what it claims to be in hopes of helping them have a smooth transition into reality.
I picked up this book shortly after my catholic parents found out that I had become an atheist. Knowing full well the coming arguments and debates that I would be subjected to by them, I read this book in two sittings. It greatly improved my confidence, as it gives simple, easy-to-follow advice on letting anyone (friends, family, coworkers) know your stance on religion. The best parts of the book, for me, where the sample "Frequently Asked Questions" section, which details the most common questions and arguments you will hear from theists, and the testimonial section from other atheists who have "come out." I would highly recommend this book for anyone, new and old atheists alike, who need that extra bit of confidence in letting the world know who you are, and what you believe.
